Strategic Focus : Urban Stewardship : SoFA Demonstration Project

The SoFA (South First Street Area) Demonstration Project models citizen leaders, collaboration and the value of urban amenities. This project unleashes the energy of SoFA stakeholders for retail recruitment, enhanced programming, ongoing maintenance and advocacy for high quality, high-density infill development and connects the urban core to the emerging Martha Gardens Arts Works District.

SoFA Demonstration Goals:

  • Enable the SoFA district’s vibrancy as an arts, entertainment and creative district that represents the unique character of San Jose and the diversity of Silicon Valley
  • Inspire a collaborative way of working that leads to creativity, experimentation and transformation throughout the downtown
  • Demonstrate the validity of 1stACT’s vision and urban design framework for downtown San Jose

Progress to Date: Expanded sidewalks, extensive landscaping and lighting and other physical improvements have improved the street’s aesthetic, making it much more attractive and welcoming to pedestrians. Programming has increased significantly with events such as the Left Coast Live Music Festival and the growth of South FIRST FRIDAYS, a monthly gallery walk. The district is seen as a great location for festivals and events. There is a leadership team on the street that is working together toward a common vision. SoFA is seen as a place of opportunity for experimentation and testing of urban design and community building ideas that would have historically been rejected. The San Jose Downtown Association and the PBID have embraced small wonders, and they are leading the charge by implementing small wonders in the Historic District and throughout the downtown.
